A little over a year ago, I started on an incredible journey without even realizing it. Something was missing in my life. Truthfully, lots of things were missing in my life, but this missing link lead me to read. I'd never been a reader...I hated it, actually. I've always been an incredibly slow reader and maybe that's partly the reason I never picked up books. Sure I've read things I enjoyed from time to time throughout my life, but very little was able to capture my attention well enough to keep up the habit, until now.
So what book sparked this reading frenzy? Fifty Shades of Grey. It seems that the writings of E L James helped form three groups of people; The Lovers, The Loathers and those who are either indifferent or chose not to read it. I fell under the Lover category. No, I didn't enjoy all aspects of the books, but it did serve to light a fire in me that had never really existed before. After reading the entire trilogy...I read it again...and again. Then I sought out more books to satiate my new found hunger for escaping the doldrum existence that had become my life.
When I had exhausted my limited knowledge of books I might enjoy, I turned to Goodreads. My decision to create a profile and attempt to browse through groups to find my next read, was a continuation of a not so direct path that I didn't even realize I'd embarked upon. I managed to lurk about for a couple of weeks before I stumbled on a post by an author looking for looking for reviews for her debut novel. I'd never written a review before. I was naive to the whole thing. I didn't realize how valuable they were to authors, otherwise I would have started writing reviews with the first book I'd read. For all those authors I neglected during those first 8 months of my reading blitz...I am truly sorry and I will try remedy the situation someday.
With the message that I sent to the author and her response to me, I'd just taken the next step on my unexpected journey.
I've come to realize at this point, that I can either continue with this post which will become incredibly long or I can break this up into a series of shorter posts and not drown you all at once. As you've probably now guessed...I choose the latter.
Thanks for coming this far with me! I hope you will come back and join me as I recount my journey over the last year and see how it continues into 2015.
